The winter concert of the Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra will be held Wednesday, March 4, 2020 beginning at 7:00 pm in McKenzie Theater on the EOU campus in La Grande. The orchestra is celebrating the Sounds of America by featuring works by American composers. According music director, Maestro Zach Banks, “This program will feature works by American composers who have synthesized classical traditions in composition with their own unique musical language.” Banks continued, “While some of the composers are lesser-known, they are all Americans born in the twentieth century. As a result, we present an opportunity for the audience to experience the music of these people whose everyday lives were not all that different than our own. He concluded, “This program’s masterwork features Symphony No. 1 by Florence Price, the first African-American woman to have her music performed by a major American orchestra. She wrote with a unique and powerful voice that left an indelible influence on American classical music, and we are so excited to share her story.”

Other works to be performed include An Outdoor Overture by Aaron Copland, and the debut of a commissioned piece by La Grande’s own composer John E. Rinehart. Alice Trindle, President of the Grande Ronde Symphony Association commented, “This original work by Mr. Rinehart was commissioned by Jan and Tim Kerns of Haines, Oregon in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra in 2017, and also pays tribute to Jan’s mother, Anita Pipes.” Trindle continued, “Ms. Pipes was Concert Mistress of the orchestra for many years beginning in 1951. She currently resides in Walla Walla, Washington and at the age of 103 is truly a long-time patron of the symphony.”
